Youth Participation in Good Governance

Governance concerns the state’s ability to serve its citizens. It refers to the rules, processes, and behavior by which interests are articulated, resources are managed, and power is exercised in society. Good governance also contributes to the general objective of developing and consolidating democracy and rule of law, especially those relating to human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Almost one third of the total population Bangladesh are Youth. By the year 2015, there will be three billion people under the age of 25 in globally. In of the 87% are in developing countries. So to ensure democracy and good governance youth should be more participates in local government process. To ensure accountability and transparency they can involve in UP standing committee. In order to benefit from young people’s capabilities, communities must ensure opportunities for youth to be engaged in development processes and activity.

Youth participation in local governance is a way to achieve positive change in young people’s lives and society, and for young people become activists and agents of change in their communities. They can informed citizen on their rights. They can advocates on against corruption and illegal issues.


To increase the level of youth participation in Bangladesh, the government must:
  • Provide public institutions for youth affairs full access to information
  • Support for youth sector at theological level
  • Support regional and international youth networks
  • Build capacities of youth and youth networks
  • Promote and recognize youth voluntarism by establishing a law for Youth Volunteer Work
  • Make more aware youth on their rights
  • Appreciate youth on him/her positive work
  • Be positive
Youth participation is not simply political involvement but is a way to influence and engage in actions and decisions that impact young people’s lives. This means not just voting, but participating in youth representative bodies, and structuring their organizations to be active and able to advance both youth interests and those of their communities.  If we can can engage more or participation in local governance than we can easily ensure good governance in our community.

Not only MDG goals but by 2030 countries should take measures to ensure freedom of speech, association, peaceful protest and access to independent media and information; increase public participation in political processes and civic engagement; guarantee the public's right to information and access to government data; ensure that people have important legal protections; and reduce bribery and corruption at all levels of government.
